Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jeong declared ‘Food Tech Gwangju’ at the opening ceremony of the ‘2023 Gwangju Food Festival’ held at the Kimdaejung Convention Center on the 12th.

Mayor Kang emphasized, “Food Tech, which was selected as one of the top five global technology trends at the 2022 CES, is a new industry field that Gwangju, a national artificial intelligence (AI) innovation hub and the city of taste, should not miss.”

Food tech is attracting attention around the world as a new industrial field that combines cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and biotechnology into the food industry.

Mayor Kang said, “At this time, the taste of Gwangju has arrived in LA. “We are showcasing Gwangju Kimchi at the LA Korean Festival,” he said. “The export scale of the domestic food industry is a rapidly growing new growth field with a goal of reaching $10 billion this year from $8.8 billion last year, and the job creation effect is also higher than that of other industries.”

Mayor Kang continued, “Now is the era of K-food, where you can easily find kimchi, gimbap, and Korean ramen even if you go abroad without having to go to a Korean restaurant.” He added, “Gwangju, known as the home of taste, is industrializing the food from Gwangju and its surrounding areas.” “We need to dominate the future of food and lead the K-food era,” he emphasized.

Mayor Kang also suggested that Daegu and Gwangju, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the ‘Moonlight Alliance’ this year, should also cooperate in the food industry. Mayor Kang emphasized, “Through the Moonlight Alliance, we are accelerating the relocation of the military airport and the Moonlight High-Speed Railway,” adding, “The Moonlight Alliance is now effective in the food industry as well.”

The ‘2023 Gwangju Food Fair’, which marks its 18th anniversary this year, will be held at the Kimdaejung Convention Center for four days from the 12th to the 15th, and will be held simultaneously with the Gwangju International Tea Culture Exhibition.

In particular, the number of participating companies and overseas buyers increased significantly, showing the possibility of industrializing the food of Gwangju, the home of delicious food. Attending the opening ceremony on this day were Mayor Kang Ki-jeong, Daegu City Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Lee Jong-hwa, Gwangju Regional Food and Drug Safety Office Commissioner Lee Soo-jeong, Korean food masters Seo Min-soo, Oh Sook-ja and Oh Myeong-sook, Gwangju Tourism Organization President Kim Jin-kang, food-related organizations, Korean food masters, overseas embassies, and representatives of Gwangju companies. This was attended.

At the opening ceremony, people cut three-color rice cakes, which have the blessing of ‘increasing wealth,’ and prayed for the endless growth of food companies.

Mayor Kang personally toured the Gwangju-Daegu Moonlight Alliance Hall, Korea Food Master Hall, Gwangju Luxury Kimchi Hall, Traditional Liquor Special Hall, and Jeju Special Hall and encouraged participating companies.

Gwangju Food Fair is an exhibition that showcases various food groups such as local agricultural specialties, processed foods, organic and health foods, and food industry equipment in one place. It is becoming a venue for domestic and foreign food companies to develop sales channels through export and purchase consultations.

This year, the scale was expanded to 450 booths by 300 companies, an increase of 132 booths from 93 companies compared to last year, and the Jeju Special Hall, Startup Franchise Hall, and International Halls including Guatemala, Singapore, and Cambodia were greatly expanded, solidifying its reputation as the largest food industry fair in the Honam region. In addition, the participation of overseas buyers to develop food companies’ sales channels increased from 12 last year to 60 this year.

A variety of foods are offered at the Gwangju Luxury Kimchi Museum and the Traditional Liquor Special Hall, and at the Korea Food Master Hall, an experience program featuring three color masters’ representative foods (tea, kimchi, and tteokgalbi) is operated.

The Gwangju-Daegu Moonlight Alliance, which has been running since 2013, features 13 Gwangju companies and 7 Daegu companies, allowing visitors to taste representative foods from both cities.

In the business lounge within the exhibition hall, 12 domestic distributors (MDs) for food companies and 60 overseas buyers will participate and take the lead in developing domestic and overseas sales channels.

In addition, Samogwi Market (43 locations), Gwangju’s representative food cooking contest, and baking contest are operated. There are also various side events such as making your own cake, scoop market, and castella pot making.

Meanwhile, the Gwangju Food Fair will hold a prize and receipt event (purchase of 30,000 won or more) for the first 300 people every day during the exhibition period.
